Personal Vehicle Sharing Programs and the Personal Auto Policy It is happening in Alaska. Enterprise and Hertz both have a vehicle sharing program. These companies probably have the *'right' auto coverage for their vehicles, but are they incorporating citizen vehicles as well? If you are thinking about using your vehicle to make a couple of extra dollars in a vehicle ride sharing program, you probably DON"T have the *'right' coverage. The personal auto policy written by most companies will have a very strong exclusion for this type of activity. Okay, so you don't extend your vehicle to a vehicle sharing program, you just drive for Uber or Lyft in your spare time to make an extra buck. You are good, right? You are driving, not some stranger. WRONG! This type of exposure is excluded in the personal auto policy under an exclusion called, "Public or Livery Conveyance exclusion". If you are going to participate in either or both of these programs or any similar programs of this nature, you need to contact your insurance agent/broker and ask what type of coverage you will need to cover you while you are participating in either a ride sharing or vehicle sharing program. *In this instance, 'right' stands for coverage that will apply during a ride share or vehicle sharing program.
